BBC winner provides ingenious solution to caring for elderly during lockdown

The number of brands stepping up to help their customers during COVID-19 is a great indicator of ethics behind our favourite labels, but which products are genuinely making life easier during lockdown?

When founder of Ting Tang, Purdey Collier, featured on the BBC’s The Customer is Always Right this week, going on to win the trophy for best product in the new series’ second episode, she didn’t immediately consider the positive consequences for her dry wash shampoo.

The number of brands stepping up to help their customers during COVID-19 is a great indicator of ethics behind our favourite labels, but which products are genuinely making life easier during lockdown?

“I developed Ting Tang to tackle hair washing problems I experienced with my young daughter, and similarly the time issues I experienced as a mum, but this was long before coronavirus was a thing. I never imagined how it would be so helpful in this situation.”

The situation Purdey is referring to is the UK lockdown. While families are struggling to care for elderly relatives in the usual ways, Ting Tang is providing a unique solution to hair washing – an activity many older people struggle with alone in the bath or shower.

Ting Tang’s dry wash shampoo is a world apart from the aerosols we’re used to. The new foam product doesn’t cover dirt and grease, but actively removes it, just like wet shampoo, without the need for any water. It isn’t a dry shampoo alternative, it’s a shampoo alternative, and that’s a first.

Without the need to shower to wash your hair, people who normally rely on family help and can’t access it can rely on Ting Tang when mobility may be an issue.

“You can wash your hair without leaving your chair. I knew straight away I had developed a bit of a game changer,” Purdey says.

Ting Tang went head to head against two other household products in the BBC’s The Customer Is Always Right, in which UK families tested each product before crowning their favourite.
Not afraid of taking a chance, Founder, Purdey gave up a career in finance to join the circus as an aerial artist in 2012, and hasn’t settled for any regular lifestyle since.

The current lockdown means she is currently stuck in Australia, but despite the distance, she’s working energetically on Ting Tang’s brand

“It’s ironic given where I am at the moment, but my customers love the fact Ting Tang is a UK brand. I’m a big believer in ethics and honesty in consumerism – I made being cruelty free very high on my list of priorities.”
